Hi. who makes a good lumber rack? All the racks I’ve seen are over priced pieces of crap erector set assemblies of stamped sheet metal with 100 nuts and bolts. I want a stainless or aluminum over cab rack that will carry lumber or a kayak. Do I have to have a shop fabricate one?

I prefer a slim build.

But back to the topic,
I too am puzzled
why there does not seem to be available
what I call a ladder rack.

It would be so helpful for canoes
as well as ladders and long material.
The third brake light would be visible.
Carry a large rooftop tent and more.
More room underneath for easier access
and more supplies.
Add an awning to the side.
Or stake out a big tarp over the whole shebang.

Other than low clearance
or becoming topheavy
like the picture above
what would be the drawback?

Just throw your lumber in the back of your truck bed like a normal person. No reason to strap it to an expensive display rack you'll likely sell 9 months from now.

Edit to add: you're probably talking about building lumber and not firewood lol. I could see where you would need a rack if hauling that kind of stuff often. I think the majority of you guys just like bolting anything and everything on to your trucks though?

I have a lumber rack that plugs into the 2" hitch, gives me a 4' bed extension. It makes carrying 10' or 12' long boards easy and once done it comes off the truck and hangs on the wall. Costs way less and keeps the truck looking clean(er).
