I'm running no rubber seal or mini snorkel under that seal. Removed both from the factory air box. 15-20 degree reduction in IAT now per the Scan Guage.

got a picture of this? I’m having a hard time picturing what you are talking about.

I'd run without a filter before I would use a K&N because the filtration would be the same without spending money.

There’s a couple other threads on that. I’m waiting for the Green Diesel tune after talking to them.

Hondo, I don't, but if you take the factory air box out and open it up, you'll see that there is a screw you can remove and that the ductwork snaps into the side of the airbox and this can be popped out. This ductwork is what the rubber seal also attaches too. I removed it all. So, now I have a big gaping hole in the lower side of my airbox. I can stick my fingers in and feel the air filter. Direct and fresh airflow now. No more sucking air through a straw like before.

I just yanked the rubber. I’ll say with the engine heat the rubber is VERY soft. I think that part needed to be plastic but still waiting to hear back from AFE directly. I’ve never had an issue like this with their products. It is a bit disappointing to say the least. I think it’ll be fine without that on there but still for the money and the waiting to ship these it’s sub par.
I thought the point of the rubber gasket was to pull COLD AIR from outside the engine compartment making it a CAI??? Please keep us updated as to any gains or response from AFE. Really wish there was a snorkel option with this CAI like the Rugged Ridge low profile situation that piped right into the air box. This would keep cold air unrestricted from outside engine compartment and keep intake up higher as well. Seems simple enough but ???

I tow a 4000lb camper quite a bit and it does...OK, sluggish on long hills with higher temps. I know there is a lot more power in this platform, just needs to breathe better.

well I solved the rubber mystery. I have to call AFE. Under WOT there’s so my flow it’s sucks the flap down. Not cool.

yea that looks no good at all. On the plus side, if they can solve that issue it looks like it wouldn't be difficult to make a working snorkel with that setup. It may slightly block some visibility and would require a little hood cutting but definitely doable.

Honestly, removing it worked just fine and I don't even see a real need for it I have had other systems with a more exposed opening. I am still waiting for them to reply to my inquiry my guess is they will say remove it or trim it back.

The flipside is there I felt there was a noticeable uptick in performance feel between 2500-3500 RPM for sure as the dyno chart showed. I think outside of the rubber issue, it's a good system with decent flow and does have some performance increase, and no codes thrown. The charge pipes should ship soon I hope so will see how those perform too. Those claim a few more lb-ft and better flow. I am not a turbo guy so I am not sure if the better flow will help the turbo cooling issues towing or not.

That's what one would think. But unfortunately all that hood seal does is make the intake have to work harder to draw air in. Close your hood very slowly while you peek inside and watch. Even with the factory airbox you can see that once the hood is closed, there's almost nowhere for air to come in with that seal in place. All I can figure is that the tiny gap between the hood and fender is the air source in factory form. It's pitiful.

That's why I disassembled my airbox and took all that stuff apart. Now there's a gaping hole in the side of the airbox, and my IATs are down nearly 20 degrees from before on some days.

Really? You think they’re that bad? I will say the factory filter has like an extra “cotton ball” type padding on the bottom of it which I’ve never seen on any vehicle before
I always knew that K&N filters didn't actually filter very well. But it wasn't until I saw the Project Farm air filter test on YouTube that I realized just how terrible they really are. It's unbelievable how little the K&N filtered compared to all the stock filters in the comparison.

I'm sure it will work fine without the seal but I would actually prefer them to make it work because again it would seal up well with a snorkel that way. I wonder if a small cage would give it enough rigidity not to suck in like that.

From Josh at AFE
“Yes We are aware of this happening, for now you can run without the rubber part, we're having some stiffer ones made, but we're a couple of weeks out before we have them to send.

The technical team will follow up.”

Seems like they are on it and with their track record I’m confident in them.

Rubber seal or not I just wish they'd send my intake! It's been three months now.

Maybe they are holding them now for this issue? Email/call them they’ve been responsive.

Do diesels have the equivalent of an MAF? On a gasser, this would be considered a pretty catastrophic fail for an aftermarket intake. It might help a lot of folks avoid this intake, for now, if you create a new thread specifically titled AFE momentum intake warning or something.

I’ve justified and internally resolved some pretty errant nonsense after spending good money on parts but this is bonkers. Why not send it back, get your refund, and wait for AFE or someone else to design something that doesn’t fail so miserably? I mean, next would be it starts eating itself which I’ve seen happen with ebay knock-off CAIs on tuned applications running higher than stock boost.

No need to send ti back the rubber seal is a completely separate part you mount on the box so they won't re-design the box itself and you can just remove the seal as a work around until they ship a different rubber section. It's not like it renders the setup completely unusable, but I agree a separate thread my be in order just for the issue/workaround/repair. AFE is a long standing reputable company I've used their stuff for almost a decade so I would not say they are in the same relm as ebay knock offs.
